Unlocking the Power of Philosophy: The Practicality for Coaches
June 15, 2021
At first glance, philosophy may seem impractical, particularly for coaches who pride themselves on their practicality. But as we delve deeper into the realm of philosophy, we discover that nothing is more practical than a well-developed philosophy, both in the competitive arena and in life itself. Our philosophy guides us every day, helping us interpret life’s events and shaping our daily actions.
Developing a coaching philosophy is, in essence, a quest for personal wisdom. Philosophy aids us in unraveling the fundamental questions of what, why, and how things work. It becomes the bedrock of our beliefs, influencing how we perceive life’s experiences and shaping our relationships with others. Above all, our philosophy embodies our core values. Building a coaching and life philosophy begins with self-discovery and prioritizing our competitive goals.
But how does a coaching philosophy make you a better coach? Your coaching philosophy serves as a compass, a set of beliefs and principles that steer your actions. It ensures that you stay true to your values while making the multitude of decisions that coaches face daily. When faced with tough choices, your philosophy should provide clarity, allowing you to make decisions aligned with your principles. Developing a coaching philosophy requires prioritizing what truly matters to you. Life and competition present us with countless choices, some simple and others profoundly challenging. From play-calling to disciplinary actions, each decision we make tests our character. By establishing a coaching philosophy, we define our priorities, enabling us to make the right choices.
We often find that careful contemplation yields better decisions than impulsive reactions in the heat of the moment. By taking time to thoughtfully analyse problems, we can make logical, fact-based decisions rather than being driven solely by emotions. The fast-paced nature of practices and competitions doesn’t always allow for deliberate decision-making. That’s why it’s crucial to invest time away from the sport to develop your philosophy. By doing so, it becomes a well-prepared tool, ready to assist you in making split-second decisions that you can stand by and be proud of.
A sound coaching philosophy doesn’t provide a ready-made answer for every problem you encounter. Instead, it equips you with guiding principles to navigate the complexities of decision-making. It reduces uncertainty when handling issues related to training rules, team discipline, conflicts with athletes, codes of conduct, offseason conditioning programs, athletes’ mindset towards competition, short- and long-term goals, success and failure, and various other facets of competition. By dedicating time to develop and nurture your coaching philosophy, you will experience heightened focus, reduced stress, the ability to push your limits purposefully, increased enjoyment, and, above all, enhanced coaching capabilities.
In conclusion, philosophy is far from impractical. It becomes the foundation upon which coaches build their success, both on and off the field. By embracing philosophy, coaches gain a valuable tool to guide their decision-making, navigate challenges, and align their actions with their values. So, let us embark on this journey of self-discovery, unlocking the power of philosophy, and transforming our coaching to new heights of excellence.
Developing a positive coaching philosophy can have numerous benefits for both coaches and athletes. Here are some reasons why it is valuable to cultivate a positive coaching philosophy:
